Chemistry Glossary: Acid

What IS Acid?

There are many many many Acids out there, and all are useful in some way or another. An Acid might appear to be nothing more than a useless hazard at first glance; sure, many are dangerous but this is mainly dictated by the Concentration of the Acid rather than a name.

An Acid is a compound that can be diluted within Water. When the Acid is diluted it is being dissolved and the Acid will start to break apart and this produces Hydrogen Ions (H+) and the pH level of the Solution will move toward the middle of the pH scale; level 7 (neutral/weak Acid or weak Base).

As I said (and as we would see) Acids dissolve in Water producing Hydrogen Ions (H+) this is due to Water having equal amounts/concentrations of Hydrogen Ions and Hydroxide Ions. Acids on the other hand have a higher Concentration of Hyrdogen Ions (H+) than Hydroxide Ions.

The Dilution happens due to Water's equality. The Water tries to equal out the Acids one sided ways but it just reduces its potency.

An Acid is a Chemical Compound that has a higher amount of Hyrdogen Ions (H+) than Hydroxide Ions.
